Stevens Graduate Fellowship
The Benjamin H. Stevens Graduate Fellowship in Regional Science was established in 1998 in memory of Dr. Benjamin H. Stevens (1929-1997), an intellectual leader whose selfless devotion to graduate students as teacher, advisor, mentor and friend continues to have a profound impact on the field of Regional Science. Graduate students enrolled in Ph.D. programs in North America are eligible to compete for the Benjamin H. Stevens Graduate Fellowship in support of their thesis research in Regional Science. Faculty at all North American Ph.D. programs are asked to encourage their best students to apply for the Thirteenth Stevens Graduate Fellowship, which will support the winning student’s thesis research in the field of Regional Science with a fellowship of $30,000 for the 2012-2013 year. The application deadline is February 15, 2013. Full submission guidelines may be found at http://www.narsc.org/newsite/?page_id=444
The 2012-13 Stevens Fellowship competition was judged by a Selection Committee composed of: Lawrence Brown, Geography, Ohio State University, chair; Nathaniel Baum-Snow, Economics, Brown University; Tony Grubesic, Information Science and Technology, Drexel University; Antonio Páez, Geography and Earth Sciences, McMaster University; and Cynthia Rogers, Economics, University of Oklahoma.
Ran Wei, a Ph.D. student in Geography at Arizona State University, was selected as the winner of the Thirteenth Annual Benjamin H. Stevens Graduate Fellowship in Regional Science. The Fellowship will provide one-year stipend of $30,000 to support Wei in her research entitled, “Spatial Analytical Methods to Support the Evaluation of Sex Offender Residency Laws.” Wei’s research seeks to identify and develop spatial analytical methods, and demonstrate them in a case study for better understanding of sex offender residency issues. Spatial analytical approaches may be generally classified as exploratory spatial data analysis methods, confirmatory methods and spatial optimization; Wei plans to concentrate on exploratory spatial data analysis and spatial optimization techniques. The unifying theme of her research is the application, development and extension of regional science methods in support of the analysis of legislation, policy and laws. Her research is supervised by Professor Alan Murray of the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.
