<div><strong>Qualified applicants must</strong> have completed by August 2012 a PhD in geography, urban studies, civil and environmental engineering, ecological economics, industrial ecology or a related field, and possess strong analytical skills and relevant modeling experiences (e.g. dynamic modeling, econometrics, GIS) as demonstrated by prior coursework, dissertation, and publication record.  Solid understanding of one or more of the following is highly desirable:  complex system dynamics; climate change economics and policy; regional science; and urban systems analysis.</div>

<strong>The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)</strong> is a quasi-federal partnership agency providing advocacy and grants to support community and economic development in Appalachia, a 13-state region. The Commission is a very small organization consisting of a federal co-chair and the governors of the member states, with a staff of approximately 60, most of whom are not federal employees.</p>
<p><strong>Position Summary:</strong> The incumbent of this position is assigned to the Division of Regional Planning and Research and is responsible for carrying out the overall functions of the ARC research program. This position is responsible for the management of ARC research projects, the evaluation of ARC research projects, and the planning for future research activities.</p>
<p><strong>Duties and Responsibilities:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Manages, reviews, evaluates, and analyzes ARC research projects and program evaluations for use in improving and developing new and existing project and program areas. The incumbent monitors contracts and reviews contractor progress reports.</li>
<li>Disseminates research results to the ARC federal office, the Appalachian states, and the Appalachian local development districts for use in evaluating individual programs and projects and improving ARC program and project delivery.</li>
<li>Analyzes regional data and assists in the development of information for public consumption concerning the socioeconomic conditions in the Appalachian Region and the economic impact of the Commission&#8217;s programs. The incumbent insures that the information is valid and understandable to the general public.</li>
<li>Determines areas where investigations, studies, research, and evaluations are needed. The incumbent prepares an annual research plan for Commission approval through staff research and study efforts.</li>
<li>Provides advice and guidance on the development of Commission research programs and projects using prior economic studies, statistical procedures, and prior research to determine the validity of proposed research activities. The incumbent advises on the attainability and the redesign of research proposals and evaluates the qualifications of potential contractors.</li>
<li>Attends Commission meetings as a resource person for socioeconomic research and program evaluations. The incumbent responds to Commission inquires and questions during Commission meetings and throughout the year as they relate to all phases of the ARC research program for economic development.</li>
<li>Recommends economic development and program evaluation speakers for ARC events. The incumbent is a member of the ARC conference planning team when the conference focus is related to ARC research.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Qualifications:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>A Ph.D. in economics, planning, or closely related field.</li>
<li>Strong knowledge of the principles of regional and economic development.</li>
<li>Experience in conducting or directing economic development or program evaluation research.</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to analyze data and translate conclusions into useful information for the general public.</li>
<li>Ability to work independently as well as in teams.</li>
<li>Experience in public speaking.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Mandatory Requirements:</strong> Successful completion of a federal background investigation; United States citizenship.</p>
<p><strong>Salary and Benefits:</strong> Pay will be commensurate with experience. This is not a federal position; however, if a federal employee is selected for this position and transfers without a break in service of more than three calendar days, he/she is entitled to continue his/her retirement, life and health insurance benefits, and leave entitlements. A non-federal selectee will be offered a comparable benefits package.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The National Agricultural and Rural Development Policy Center (NARDeP) is a new federally-funded initiative jointly managed by the nation’s four Regional Rural Development Centers. The four centers are hosted by Pennsylvania State University, Michigan State University, Mississippi State University and Utah State University.</p>
<p><strong>The NARDeP Center seeks applicants for two post-doctoral fellow positions</strong>. The fellows will actively engage with the NARDeP national advisory board, stakeholders, and elected and appointed officials to develop and disseminate policy briefs, supplemented with refereed journal articles related to the following broad areas:</p>
<p>. The farm and agricultural sectors</p>
<p>. The environment</p>
<p>. Rural families, households and economies</p>
<p>. Consumers, food and nutrition</p>
<p><strong>Both positions will be filled initially for twelve months, with an additional 6-12 months appointment contingent on performance and availability of funds</strong>. Through the experience with NARDeP, the fellows will complement the strong disciplinary training of their PhD program with exposure to a broad range of social sciences and learning-by-doing in policy dialog and evaluation, grant development and project execution. Some opportunity may exist for a limited amount of graduate-level teaching. At the end of their post-doctoral experiences, the fellows will have developed a national network of senior academic and policy colleagues from which they may launch successful careers as faculty members or think-tank researchers.</p>
<p>One fellow will provide team leadership in the area of quantitative regional economic modeling and be located at the Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pa. The other fellow will provide leadership to social media or other data mining for national and regional issue identification and framing, and be located at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. For this position prior training in political science, sociology or related disciplines will be advantageous. Each fellow will interact virtually with the full NARDeP team, with supplemental travel as needed to domestic professional conferences, policy meetings in Washington DC and the three other RRDC host sites, or to meet with consultants at other universities.</p>
<p>Fellows will be compensated at a level commensurate with recent PhDs in their field of study, and will have access to health care benefits.</p>
<p><strong>Required Qualifications:</strong></p>
<p>. PhD in a social science field related to the focus area for which the individual is applying by date of appointment.</p>
<p>. Demonstrated interest in topics addressed by NARDeP.</p>
<p>. Demonstrated empirical modeling skills.</p>
<p>. Strong English written and verbal communications skills.</p>
<p>. Ability to travel independently by air and drive an automobile.</p>
<p>. US Citizen or permanent resident status.</p>
<p><strong>Preferred Qualifications:</strong></p>
<p>. Academic record of publications related to the issues addressed by NARDeP.</p>
<p>. Demonstrated ability to synthesize academic and policy inputs from a wide array of sources.</p>
<p>. Understanding of the land grant university system.</p>
<p>. Experience living or working in rural areas of the United States.</p>
<p>. PhD in process or completed within last year, or PhD with strong professional experiences in a related but different area of application (e.g., urban economics, international development economics, health care policy, telecommunications policy, state and local government administration).</p>
<p><strong>Individuals applying for the position should expect to begin work within the June 1 – October 1, 2012 window.</strong> Individuals who hold ABD status are strongly encouraged to apply but will not be appointed until they have met all degree requirements.</p>
<p><strong>Application Procedure:</strong></p>
<p>Applicants should submit a letter of application. The letter should clearly indicate which position is sought (economics or public policy). Individuals with experience and training in both economics and public policy are welcome to apply for both positions simultaneously with one application. The letter of application should address how the post-doctoral experience will help the candidate achieve their ultimate career goal. Candidates holding ABD status should specify their expected date of degree completion. In addition, applicants should provide a curriculum vita, copy of PhD program course transcripts, a writing sample, and cell phone contacts for three professional references.</p>

<p>The Department of Geography at the University of Lethbridge is seeking to fill one postdoctoral research fellow position. This is a two year appointment starting on May 1, 2012. The successful applicant will be involved in a TECTERRA (<a href="https://mail.uncc.edu/OWA/redir.aspx?C=0e5ec9208dfe4500bf6b32cb43141bbe&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.tecterra.com">www.tecterra.com</a>) funded project focused on the development and application of Food Security Forecast Systems.</p>
<p><strong>The research is focused</strong> on the design of integrated assessment models for food security forecast systems. The successful candidate will conduct research on impacts of biophysical and anthropogenic changes on resource uses and food production and multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) using data from stakeholder surveys. The PDF will work with Prof. Wei Xu on this project. Major responsibilities of the PDF include collecting and analyzing data, designing and applying integrated assessment (IA) tools, and incorporating IA into the food security forecast system.</p>
<p><strong>Qualification &amp; Skills</strong>: The candidate should have a PhD in Geography or cognate fields. She or he should have experience in GIS and MCDM modeling. Experience in programming and statistical packages such as R is desirable.</p>
<p><strong>Salary and Benefit</strong>:  Salary is commensurate with experience and based on current NSERC guidelines</p>

<p>The Regional Science Association International organizes its <strong>2nd Summer Course</strong>, with the theme <strong><em>Regional and Urban Economics &#8211; </em></strong><strong><em>Operational models of regional economies and spatial econometrics  </em></strong>that will be held between <strong>June 4<sup>th</sup> until June 9<sup>th</sup> 2011 in São Miguel Island</strong>, Azores, Portugal.</p>
<p><strong><em></em></strong>The RSAI Summer Course offers an integrated structure of training, active participation, and discussion for PhD students and young researchers in regional science.</p>
<p>The summer course will be focused on the issue Regional and Urban Economics, Operational models of regional economies and spatial econometrics. In a format of combined lectures and hands on training provided by top-level experts that will lectures the following themes of regional science: Regional and Urban Economics, Transport Economics, Spatial econometrics &amp; Operational models of regional and urban economies.</p>

<p>Applications are invited for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position in Regional Natural Resources Planning and Management at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and maintain an active research program focusing on regional planning of natural resources. The specific areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to water resources, urban ecology, energy development, or land use planning. Extramural support through grants and contracts and peer-reviewed publication of research results is expected of departmental faculty. Primary teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate courses in ecology and conservation of natural resources, regional planning and management of natural resources, and a graduate course in the area of expertise. The department and college are active participants in the South Central Climate Science Center Consortium and the college’s Sustainable Land and Water Use strategic research initiative, and collaboration with these groups will be encouraged. Professional service activities are expected. This is a 9-month teaching and research position, with summer salary dependent upon availability of research grants or additional teaching. <strong>Anticipated start date is August 1, 2012. </strong></p>
<p><strong>THE DEPARTMENT</strong></p>
<p>The Department of Natural Resources Management consists of 14 full-time faculty members. About 250 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students are currently enrolled. Degrees are offered at the B.S. level in Natural Resources Management with emphasis areas in Wildlife biology, Fisheries Biology, Range conservation, Ranch management, and Conservation science. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in Wildlife, Aquatic and Wildlands Science and Management. The department encourages multidisciplinary research and also houses management and research staff from state and federal natural resources agencies.</p>
<p><strong>THE COLLEGE</strong></p>
<p>The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is a leading college at Texas Tech University with six academic departments: Agriculture and Applied Economics, Agricultural Education and Communications, Animal and Food Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Plant and Soil Science, and Natural Resources Management, as well as multiple research centers and institutes. For the most recent academic year, the college had 80 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 1,437 undergraduates, 210 M.S. students, and 138 Ph.D. students. CASNR has an annual operating budget of more than $10M and receives approximately $15M annually in research funding.</p>
<p><strong>THE UNIVERSITY</strong><br />
Texas Tech University is one of four major state-supported multidisciplinary universities in Texas. The University consists of 10 colleges, a School of Law, The Graduate School, and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Currently, more than 32,000 students attend classes at the Lubbock campus. A Water Research Center resides within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and the Department is an active player in the South Central Climate Center Consortium. The City of Lubbock has about 230,000 residents, a moderate to low cost of living, and is situated on the Llano Estacado (Southern High Plains).</p>

GIScience 2012 Conference, Columbus, OH, USA &#8211; 18 September 2012</strong></p>
<p>Enabled by new (geo)computational techniques and approaches, we are currently witnessing a resurgence of interest in both research papers as well as project methodologies that draw on the original concepts and theories from Time-Geography.</p>
<p>This workshop aims to bring together researchers applying Time-Geographic concepts in their research in the multidisciplinary context of GIScience.</p>
<p><strong>Topics of this workshop include, but are not limited to:</strong></p>
<p>§  Analytical extensions of the Time-Geographic framework</p>
<p>§  Innovative Time-Geographic methods addressing the problems of movement, transport and interaction</p>
<p>§  Scalability &#8211; how to operationalise aggregation and generalisation of space-time paths</p>
<p>§  Spatio-temporal data models for implementing Time-Geographic approaches</p>
<p>§  GIS-based methods for comparison of multiple space-time paths which explicitly consider spatial and temporal dimensions</p>
<p>§  Data sources (including VGI), data quality/resolution issues, and ‘models vs. real-world data’</p>
<p>§  Visualisation of voluminous spatio-temporal data sets and their interpretation</p>
<p>§  Interactive approaches addressing any of the above</p>
<p><strong>Authors are invited to submit original research contributions in English, on any topic related to those above. </strong>There is a full paper track as well as an extended abstract track to encourage submission of works presenting research in progress. We encourage submissions from PhD students.</p>
<p><strong>Extended abstracts (less than 1500 words) should be emailed to Otto Huisman (huisman@itc.nl), or Tijs Neutens(tijs.neutens@ugent.be) by the dates specified below</strong>. Each submission will be reviewed by at least 2 members of the program committee. All accepted extended abstracts will be published online before the workshop. Authors of the best 6-8 papers will be invited to extend their papers for a journal special issue. Selection will be based on scientific quality, originality, and relevance to workshop topics.</p>
